Metal Hardness And The Way To Test
Hardness is a mechanical performance index that measures the degree of hardness of metal materials. It represents the ability of the metal surface to resist deformation in a local volume. Hardness is not a simple physical concept, but a comprehensive index of mechanical properties such as material elasticity, plasticity, strength and toughness.
Tempering heats the worked metal to temperatures at which the grains begin to dissolve. As the grain structure of the metal undergoes cold forming, the grains are stretched and changed. The surface becomes harder and resists contact deformation. Tempering heats the processed metal to a temperature where the crystal grains begin to dissolve.
The hardness is usually measured by indentation method. Press the specified indenter into the surface layer of the metal material, and then determine the hardness value according to the area or depth of the indentation. According to different indenters and pressures, commonly used hardness indicators include Brinell hardness, Rockwell hardness and Vickers hardness.
