When and How to replace leaf spring bushing?
Leaf springs are key components of vehicle suspension system, which can provide smooth driving. Suspension systems used for semi-trailers, trucks, trailers, and other heavy-duty vehicles. Leaf springs are slender and arc-shaped, and are made of multi-layer conical spring steel.
The leaf spring bushing works in conjunction with leaf springs and other suspension system components. The leaf spring bushing helps absorb shock and pressure, and needs to be replaced once worn. If you notice the following symptoms, you should check your leaf spring bushing. Since some of these signs can be very subtle, it is always a good idea to check your leaf springs, and other suspension components regularly, especially if you are driving a truck that often hauls heavy loads.
1. The vehicle will rattle when driving on gravel roads.
2. When you turn sharply or step on the brakes, the vehicle sounds dull.
3. The vehicle feels as if it is shaking along the front.
Leaf spring bushing replacement is a multi-step process and can be difficult. The steps include the following.
1. Jack up the vehicle and secure it
2. Remove the bolts holding the leaf springs
3. Remove the bushings from the spring eyes
4. Clean the inside of the spring eyes, removing only rust and scale
5. Select the proper bushing to match the spring eyes
6. Carefully drive the new bushings into the eyes, making sure they are square
7. Raise the rear axle until the spring eyes are centered in the hanger
8. Install the bolt and tighten the nut
9. Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle to the ground.
