Basic characteristics of rubber materials

2021-04-12

High elasticity

The elastic modulus of rubber is small, generally in 1-9.8MPa, the elongation deformation is large, the elongation can be up to 100%, still has the characteristics of recovery, and can maintain the elasticity in a wide range of temperature (-50--+150).

Viscoelastic

Rubber is a viscoelastic body, due to the existence of macromolecular inter force, the rubber by external force, deformation by time and temperature and other conditions, showing obvious stress relaxation and creep phenomenon, vibration or alternating stress and other periods, resulting in hysteresis loss.

The function of buffering and damping

Rubber has a moderating effect on the transmission of sound and vibration, which can be used to prevent noise and vibration.

Electrical insulation

Rubber, like plastic, is an electrical insulating material.

Temperature dependent

Polymer materials are generally affected by temperature, rubber at low temperature in the glassy state becomes hard and brittle, at high temperature is being softening, melting, thermal oxidation, thermal decomposition and combustion.

Aging phenomenon

If there is metal corrosion, wood decay, rock weathering, rubber will also be aging due to changes in environmental conditions, so that the performance is deteriorated, the service life is shortened.

It must be vulcanized

Rubber must be added to sulfur or other materials that can vulcanize rubber, so that rubber macromolecules cross linked into space network structure, to get rubber products with use value, but thermoplastic rubber can not be vulcanized.
